DJ Rekha has pioneered a uniquely New York spin on Punjabi-rooted bhangra and Bollywood disco beats with her long-running parties, galvanizing a generation of South Asian dancers. “Baraat” may be the Hindi word for “wedding processional”, but drummer Sunny Jain's funky brass and dhol band Red Baraat could only have been forged in NYC. Its hyper-animated music is one part bhangra, one part bluesy second-line and a non-stop party.
