“Filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko (High Art, Laurel Canyon) is hoping her latest film, The Kids Are All Right, proves she's ready for prime studio time. While the subject matter still trends in indie waters — the children of a lesbian couple decide it's time they meet their biological dad — Cholodenko demonstrates she can do a little bit romantic comedy and a little bit family drama. She's always been great at relationships, and the film's strong cast of Annette Benning, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo delivers dynamic performances. A superb decade-spanning soundtrack that includes Joni Mitchell, Tame Impala, Fever Ray, and X supplies a sturdy backbone to Cholodenko's pro-estrogen picture.”
Focus Features says:
Nic and Jules (three-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening and four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore) are married and share a cozy suburban Southern California home with their teenage children, Joni and Laser (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson). Nic and Jules – or, when referred to jointly by Joni, “Moms” – gave birth to and raised their children, and built a family life for the four of them. As Joni prepares to leave for college, 15-year-old Laser presses her for a big favor. He wants Joni, now 18, to help him find their biological father; the two teenagers were conceived by donor insemination.
