Animal Kingdom may come from Down Under, but it's certainly no Crocodile Dundee. David Michôd's debut feature is a taut, well-paced thriller about a crime family slowly unraveling. Seventeen-year-old J has been shielded from the noxious members of his familial gene pool, but after his mom ODs he has no where to turn but his gangster grandma and crooked uncles. If lady luck had ever paid this clan a visit, let's just say fear and paranoia snuck up and suffocated her. Tremendous performances, a great script, rich and menacing sound design, and the masterful use of Air Supply's "I'm All Out Love" make this film fit for box-office survival.

Landmark Sunshine says…

Animal Kingdom says:

Welcome to the Melbourne underworld. Following the death of his mother, 17-year-old Joshua "J" Cody moves in with his hitherto-estranged family, under the watchful eye of his doting grandmother, Janine "Smurf" Cody, and her three criminal sons. Animal Kingdom is a powerful crime drama exploring the tense battle between a criminal family and the police, and the ordinary lives caught in the middle.
