“Though an eye disorder is the prevailing malady in Christina Masciotti's engrossing Vision Disturbance, just about every sense endures a distortion. Mondo, an upstanding Greek immigrant, has been cast off by her husband for another — a disturbance that erupts a loss of visual depth perception. Seeking remedy from an ophthalmologist with demons of his own, she relays her story in broken English as oddly disjointed as her new world view. In director Richard Maxwell's hands, patient and doctor grope toward connection. Throughout, blurred views, botched Americanisms, and frustrated bangs in the name of music therapy may distort, but do not, thankfully, damn to isolation.”
Mondo, a middle-aged Greek immigrant woman living in smalltown Pennsylvania loses her vision while going through a divorce from her traditional, Greek husband. The stress has detonated an eye disorder that features a loss of depth perception among other perplexing symptoms. She seeks treatment from Dr. Hull who uses an unorthodox approach involving music therapy to help her regain her eyesight. Vision Disturbance is about two people whose structured lives suddenly fall apart and who are vehemently looking to find new ground and belonging. With great empathy for her characters, Masciotti’s new play conveys with much passion that remarkable transformation is possible.
