Sometimes, all we need out of theatre is an old-fashioned boy-meets-girl story. The good news is, Now Circa Then is just that: two twentysomethings get stuck as a historical reenactment couple at Manhattan's Tenement Museum. Their resentment for each other soon morphs into something sweet and familiar, as we watch these two navigate their relationship, literally playing "house" together all day. The stage has been made into a tenement-sized apartment, with the audience all around the cramped space. Performers Stephen Plunkett and Maureen Sebastian almost never leave the stage, and aren't ever anything but great.

Ars Nova Theater says…

Meet Julian and Josephine, an immigrant couple on New York's Lower East Side, circa 1890. Meet Gideon and Margie, an unlikely pair of historical reenactors, circa now. A museum tour goes off the rails in this scrappy tale of old places, new beginnings and timeless questions.
