“If you've read Kazuo Ishiguro's novel Never Let Me Go, then you know what this film is about. If you haven't, look elsewhere for plot details because we recommend going into this one blind. What we will reveal is that this quasi sci-fi cinematic adaptation features stellar performances from its three stars, Carey Mulligan (An Education), Keira Knightly, and Andrew soon-to-be-Spiderman Garfield; and filmmaker Mark Romanek is restrained and meticulous in his direction. Perhaps best known for his music videos for the likes of Beck, Jay Z, and Nine Inch Nails, Romanek deserves kudos for the sublime landscape he dots for Ishiguro's philosophically challenging narrative. We'd classify this one as a lingerer.”
In his highly acclaimed novel Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro (The Remains of the Day) created a remarkable story of love, loss and hidden truths. In it he posed the fundamental question: What makes us human? Now director Mark Romanek and writer Alex Garland bring Ishiguro’s hauntingly poignant and emotional story to the screen. Kathy (Mulligan), Tommy (Garfield) and Ruth (Knightley) live in a world and a time that feel familiar to us, but are not quite like anything we know. They spend their childhood at Hailsham, a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. When they leave the shelter of the school and the terrible truth of their fate is revealed to them, they must also confront the deep feelings of love, jealousy and betrayal that threaten to pull them apart.
