Replace the '70s references in A.R. Gurney's Office Hours and it could take place today. The questions raised in this passionate exploration of a college education are not only unanswerable but ridiculous. Gurney divides scenes according to the academic year and particular "dead white males" under discussion in the dreaded Western Tradition course. He is delightfully neutral on the merits of this syllabus with one exception: books matter. Director Jim Simpson's approach is fast-paced and fun. For Office Hours, the Flea's resident company, the Bats, is divided into Homer and Dante casts. The Homers were all wonderful, particularly Katherine Folk-Sullivan as a professor living a Divine Comedy and Turna Mete providing a lesson in Shakespeare outside the classroom.

The Flea Theater says…

Out with the old and in with the new. Across college campuses in the ‘70s, teachers and students engaged in a battle of their own – making education relevant. Written specifically for The Bats, this World Premiere tackles the Great Books curriculum and puts dead white men to the test. Says Gurney, “I wrote OFFICE HOURS to be performed by The Bats at The Flea Theater. The play is designed to display the talents, energy, and versatility of these young actors.”
