Alan Gilbert begins his second season with two works reflecting his joyfully edgy programming that has galvanized both orchestra and audience. Itzhak Perlman, a familiar and welcome guest, joins the Philharmonic for Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. The NYP gave the American premiere of this popular piece in 1844, and one century later, the world premiere of Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber. Intended for the ballet (Balanchine's 1952 attempt is lost), it's as romantic as anything Weber wrote — minus the cuteness. The refugee Yale Professor of Music's neoclassic chrysalis is brassy and sexy. Orchestras measure their versatility by wild rides like Symphonic Metamorphoses, and this is an exciting way to hear the NYP's evolving new sound.
