A gritty treasure of urban romanticism, the soulful, stirring record Saint Judas — despite Growden's impressive supporting ensemble and self-accompaniment on the accordion, baritone sax, banjo, and handlebars — remains undeniably a voice-driven document, at the heart of which are Growden's richly inflected and subtly expressive vocals. But an engaging, compelling stage presence, a way with improvisational solos (seriously, handelbars; he plays them like a flute, right off a bike), and the special power of the singer's low-pitched voice in a quiet room are why the material still begs to be heard in person — especially at his first New York City appearance in nearly six years.

The Living Room says…

Saint Judas is Mark Growden's first studio album in eight years, a stunning exploration of pain and catharsis, love and transformation, tenderness and desire; a rich and haunting collection of stories and melodies that embraces and celebrates the saints and sinners in each of us. As a composer and performer, Mark Growden has released several critically acclaimed albums, and composed original musical scores for a number of Dance and Theater companies. Growden has also scored several films including Blood, Tea and Red String, which won Best Animation at the San Francisco Independent Film Festival and at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal.
