For the debut of this original series, Arts in Mind presents a conversation between two artists whose work centers around mental institutions. Christopher Payne spent seven years exploring and documenting abandoned state mental institutions around the country. This photographic project culminated in his book Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals, with an essay by Oliver Sacks. Visual artist Anna Schuleit installed 28,000 potted flowers, from African violets to orange tulips, in full bloom throughout four floors of the Massachusetts Mental Health Center to address the absence of flowers in psychiatric hospitals. That piece, Bloom, was named by ArtForum one of the ten outstanding artworks in history. Come out and hear what inspired these artists to create these masterful works.
