“You don't have to know Virginia Woolf's novel to enjoy Sarah Ruhl's excellent adaptation of how an Elizabethan youth (Francesca Faridany) becomes immortal when transformed into a woman. By turning Woolf's elegant prose into dialogue, Ruhl finds humor and wisdom in the unexplained. Orlando's writerly ambitions can only be fulfilled once she looks past the sensual and lives. Director Rebecca Taichman chronicles the journey with gorgeous moments such as the recurring skating figure of Orlando's great love Sasha (Annika Boris). Her other lovers are David Greenspan (a randy Elizabeth I), Tom Nelis, and Howard Overshown. Francesca Faridany is magical as a teenage boy and woman admitting to 36.”
Meet Virginia Woolf's Orlando, your typical Elizabethan Man: a favorite of the Queen, madly in love with a Russian Princess, fleeing an Archduchess and waking up one fine day in Constantinople to find he has become, of all things, a woman. She survives the 19th and 20th Centuries grappling with what it means to live fully in the present, in our own skin, in our own gender, and in our own time.
