The latest from Tony award-winning playwright David Henry Hwan, Chinglish is reminiscent of a 1940s screwball romantic comedy, albeit one with a decidedly 21st-century Chinese twist. The plot and humor hinges on a bottomless supply of cultural and linguistic misfires, adroitly conveyed via English supertitles of Mandarin exchanges. Suddenly, the audience is in on the Chinese side of things, and the scenes between the party officials and the bumbling American businessman trump romance every time.

Longacre Theatre says…

An American businessman arrives in a bustling Chinese province looking to score a lucrative contact for his family’s sign-making firm. He soon discovers that the complexities of such a venture far outstrip the expected differences in language, customs and manners—and call into question even the most basic assumptions of human conduct.
