“Whether due to the will of art historian RoseLee Goldberg or the attention given the naked people at MoMA last year, performance art is back in favor. Goldberg, a former curator at the Kitchen, fought tirelessly to establish Performa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to exploring live performance's critical role, and launch a biennial devoted to the celebration of old and new work. Over the next three weeks, galleries, museums, and performance spaces host a number of exciting, cutting-edge productions by acclaimed international artists such as Shirin Neshat, Matthew Stone, Reggie Watts, Justin Bond, Robert Ashley, Liz Magic Laser, Guy Maddin, and skateboarder Raphaël Zarka. Standouts among the dynamic schedule include James Franco and Laurel Nakadate's séance with Tennessee Williams, Eric Steen's Brew Day, Mika Rottenberg and Jon Kessler's Performa-commissioned Seven, where gawkers witness the reaping of a chakra juicer, and a 52-hour program called Fluxus Weekend that features various actions, a shop, and music all in the spirit of the art movement popularized in 1960's. For those who want schooling, head over to Performa Hub, where artists are holding master classes, or hit up the Performa After Hours to mix and mingle with participants and possibly take in an impromptu (alcohol-induced) performance.”
