“For over 30 years, Sherrie Levine has been lifting artwork from other artists in a sly attempt to undermine generally accepted notions of originality. Billiard tables after Man Ray's "La Fortune," a shiny bronze take on Duchamp's "Fountain," and her seminal work of re-photography "After Walker Evans,"in which she photographed famous images by Walker Evans that she took directly from an exhibition catalogue. Playing with notions of authorship, authenticity, the effect of infinite reproducibility, and the cult of the artist as individual, in Mayhem, a survey of her work, Levine takes a position frequently the province of her male counterparts, while simultaneously taking a jab at them as well.”
