“From his outlandish comments — calling George W. Bush an asshole or admitting to be a Nazi — to his profound fear of flying, Danish filmmaker and Dogme95 founder Lars von Trier gives Terrence Malick (Tree of Life) a run for his money in the most eccentric filmmaker category. Melancholia, the follow-up to his genital-mutilating psycho-thriller Anti-Christ, is an accessible and entrancing epic that casts Kristen Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg as sisters facing the end of the world as a planet named Melancholia appears to be hurtling towards Earth. Dunst is intoxicating as Justine, the clinically depressed newlywed whose wedding reception is lined with cameos by John Hurt, Charlotte Rampling, and Udo Kier. A vehicle that allows von Trier to exorcise a number of personal demons (the idea for the film came to him during a therapy session), this visually lush drama will likely render you speechless come the credit roll.”
