Judging from the rapid yearly deterioration of New York's Fringe Festival, it's no wonder it took Silence! The Musical, a 2005 alum of the fest, six years and almost as many short-lived productions to come into its own; but the results were worth the wait. The latest reincarnation of The Silence of the Lambs musical parody has taken a silly, gimmicky concept and elevated it to a nonstop laugh-out-loud experience — not an easy task in an era of recycled comedy. The musical's creators playfully deconstruct the film's essence into a combination of hilariously inappropriate musical numbers and sharp one-liners that are true to the film, yet surprisingly fresh. The cast, led by the outstanding Jenn Harris as Clarice Starling, is obviously having as much fun as the audience as they parody cinema genres and Broadway standbys in a furiously fast pace. The end result is a light and fluffy, yet sweet and satisfying treat.
