“Crafting bizarre cinematic head-trippers for over 45 years, Jan Svankmajer is an award-winning Czech animator who has inspired several generations of filmmakers, including Terry Gilliam, Henry Selick, Tim Burton, and the Brothers Quay, who named a film for him. The card-carrying surrealist has experimented with a number of production techniques but all of his work is laced with dark humor and has a Kafkaesque undercurrent. For his latest film, Surviving Life, a psychoanalytical comedy about a middle-aged man who prefers his dreams to his everyday existence, Svankmajer weaves live action with cut-out animation, a painstaking process that yields bewitching results. To honor this project and Svankmajer, the Museum of the Moving Image is showcasing 50 collages used to create frames from the film, as well as two of the auteur's earlier shorts. A fascinating deconstruction of the production and window into Svankmajer's whimsy, the exhibition kicks off with a screening of Surviving Life and a reception.”
Note:
Surviving Life screens on Dec 1 at 7pm, a reception precedes.
