“Seven years have passed since Alexander Payne's Best Director Oscar for Sideways went to Clint Eastwood. And just as he was being tossed into the "where they are now?" category, the thinking-man's filmmaker returns with a screen adaptation of Kaui Hart Hemmings' debut novel The Descendants. Set in Hawaii, the dramedy revolves around workaholic Matt King (George Clooney), whose wife has slipped into a coma following a boating accident, leaving him to parent his two daughters — a role he's fairly unfamiliar with. Concurrently, King, who descends from Hawaiian royalty, is charged with brokering a lucrative but controversial land deal for his extended family. Stories exploring men in crisis are a Payne speciality (other examples being About Schmidt and Election), and while The Descendants isn't as razor-sharp as its predecessors, it's still worthwhile viewing.”
