“Winter solstice, we know it's hard competing with your brighter sibling summer, but Make Music New York, the folks who put together the evening of free outdoor concerts in June, are creating a soundtrack this year that should give you a more lasting and fun impression. Anyone can join the dozen of musical parades that are scheduled to launch in locations like Tompkins Square Park, the High Line, Grand Army Plaza, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Coney Island-bound F-train platforms. Each parade has a different musical theme and leader. Tom Peyton is conducting a symphony of bells while Chris Marianetti's roving brass band reads notes off building facades, and the Knights perform Bach on subway platforms for F-train riders. Unsilent Night creator Phil Kline is also getting in on the act with a presentation of Peregrine, a participatory walking boombox piece that he wrote for the Evento festival. Check the site for ways to celebrate the short-changed darkest day of the year.”
