We're glad that writer/director Kenneth Lonergan and Fox Searchlight finally let Margaret come out to play theatrically. In the can since 2005, the filmmaker's directorial follow-up to You Can Count on Me became an edit bay nightmare, as cut after cut was squelched. Thankfully, Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker stepped in and spliced together a winning assembly, because this emotionally involving epic merits meditation. Anna Paquin is superb as Lisa Cohen, a melodramatic 17-year-old private schooler coping with guilt following a traffic accident she inadvertently caused. Wallowing in teen angst, Lisa is horribly naive when it comes to politics, sex, and relationships, and she unravels on screen. A well-conceived script and exceptional cast — that includes Matt Damon, J. Smith-Cameron, Kieran Culkin, and Mark Ruffalo — make the film's 150-minute running time a satisfying swallow.
