“In celebration of its centennial, the New York Public Library is going into its archives and bringing out some items that rarely see the light of day for a special exhibition. Featured in this show are a copy of the Gutenberg Bible, one of Malcolm X's journals, Mary Shelley's hair, the final draft of George Washington's farewell address, and Virginia Woolf's walking stick. While the historical value of some items is obvious, there are others that some are sure to find disturbing, like a copy of Mein Kampf. But as an earlier director of the library once said, "If the devil himself wrote a book, we’d want it in the Library." This is a rare look into one of the most important institutions in the country.”
