White Columns — the alternative art space founded in 1970 by Gordon Matta-Clark and Jeffrey Lew — has done a lot for artists over the years. So each year, when the benefit auction rolls around, some of the world's best artists, many of whom have, at some point, gotten support from non-profit arts institutions like White Columns come out to show their support by donating work. Rita Ackermann, Carter, Elizabeth Peyton, Leigh Ledare, Peter Doig, and Matthew Higgs are some of this year's participating artists. We're particularly fond of Cecily Brown's luschiously reworked album cover (valued at $45,000). And we hear Dan Colen picked up some trash on his way to White Columns and photocopied that, one photocopy print of which (there were 25 originally) is up for auction —the others in the edition are sold out. But don't be dismayed. This makes for a lively discussion of what constitutes contemporary art. And with work by over 85 artists, at a variety of price points, there's something for every aspiring collector. Review the artworks in advance and get ready to duke it out.
