“MoMA PS1 presents Ryan Trecartin: Any Ever the New York premiere of the video artist's work from 2007-2010. Trecartin, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, was discovered in 2005 when artist Sue de Beer came across his work on his Friendster page. Since then, his campy, non-linear videos, peopled with an assortment of manic outcasts — John Waters meets after school specials for the internet age —acting out banal and non-sensical pseudo dramas have gained art-world prominence. And like John Waters' insouciant weirdos, Trecartin's are utterly compelling. With their hyper-kinectic surreal collage style, his videos explore issues of identy, gender, sexuality, and family dynamics that are safe for those ADD-addled connoisseurs of the high, low, or middle-brow.”
