“How sad that politicians never bother studying the lessons theatre teaches. They would learn much from Ellen McLaughlin's powerful Ajax in Iraq. Two personal tragedies occur due to larger conflicts: Ajax is a proud Trojan War general destroyed by deceit, and AJ is a proud solider sexually abused by her commanding officer in Iraq. Linking their stories are Athena, vain Goddess of War, and the Chorus of soliders who recite Sophocles and first-person narratives of Iraq vets. The Chorus is Ajax in Iraq's heartbeat. They dance as they do in Greek drama, only this time for Kali, Hindu Goddess of Destruction. The ancient text shrieks at the futility of the two wars, both started on false pretenses.”
Note:
There's an additional performance on Wednesday, June 22 at 8pm.
