What happens to a happy couple who feel extremely differently about having children? In her labyrinthine new play, The Pillow Book, Anna Moench explores the many possible outcomes of this conflict by slicing various narratives into short vignettes performed out of chronological order. The result is a piece that gradually reveals its connections and depth while being funny, surprising, and insightful along the way. The three person cast plays many roles, ranging from Tanzanian safari guide to urban bedbug exterminator. Julie Fitzpatrick gives the standout performance, taking a role that could be played as heartless and imbuing it with empathy.
