To the naked eye, Allard van Hoorn's 007_Urban_Songline looks like a room filled with strings; a child-like maze for visitors to bob and weave through. But if you go a little bit deeper and pick up an instruction sheet, you find that it's a gigantic musical instrument where gallery goers are performers, invited to strum the strings, which are connected to strategically placed microphones. The exhibit is inspired by a trip van Hoorn took to Australia where he discovered "songlines" or "dream tracks," the notion that the topography of the land can be mapped through music or song. To hear the sonic possibilities of his urban realization, check out this video captured opening night. A similar performance, which will be recorded and pressed into vinyl, is planned for the closing night event on Saturday, February 18th, at 7pm.
