“Thom Powers and Raphaela Neihausen's documentary series, Stranger Than Fiction, makes for an excellent weekly retreat during the cold, dark winter months. For season 19, the programming takes a creative turn, opening with filmmaker Corinne van der Borch's Girl with Black Balloons, an excavation of longtime Chelsea Hotel resident Bettina. Other stars of the slate include Thom Zimny's behind-the-scenes look at Bruce Springsteen's creative process in The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town, Leon Gast's entertaining and thought-provoking portrait of paparazzi extraordinaire Ron Galella in Smash His Camera, and Alysa Nahmias and Benjamin Murray's festival traveler uses an unfinished architectural project to reflect on the Cuban experience over the last 60 years in Unfinished Spaces. Woody Allen's mockumentary Zelig also blends into the schedule in honor of Valentine's Day and Tootie's Last Suit is unmasked for Mardi Gras.
