We wax poetic about many films here at Flavorpill, but nothing we've chattered about in the past approaches the newly restored version of Georges Méliès' historic 16-minute film, Le Voyage dans la Lune. A turn-of-the-20th-century French filmmaker, Méliès was a pioneer in the use of special effects and is considered by many to be the first cinemagician. His color film, Le Voyage dans la Lune, was an international sensation when it first appeared in 1902, but for many generations since has only been known in B&W. Now, thanks to a 12-year "resurrection" project undertaken by Tom Burton of Technicolor, the brilliant hues glow again. Premiering at Cannes in 2011, the awe-inspiring short is enhanced by a stellar soundtrack from French electronic duo Air — a project the Astralwerks recording artists have since expanded into a full-length album. For a limited time, Méliès' masterpiece can be seen in theaters, screening with Lobster Films' playful documentary about the restoration, Le Voyage Extraordinaire. It's a package deal you don't want to miss.
