“Face it, the Oscars are more fun to follow when you've actually seen the nominated films, and thanks to ShortsHD and Magnolia, all the competing shorts are again screening theatrically for a limited time. Organized into three bundles by category (animation, live action, and documentary), this year's Academy picks run the time-gamut from under 10 minutes to over 40. The animated films are always inspiring to see up on the big screen. This year's lot includes the lovely ode to booklovers, The Fantastical Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore; Pixar's stellar La Luna; and the hand-drawn Sunday, about a small town boy's activities. As for the live action, Raju and the humorous Norway entry, Tuba Atlantic, are among our faves. And in the documentary set, topics covered range from the facial reconstruction of Muslim acid-attack victims to last year's tsunami in Japan.”
