The Film Society of Lincoln Center picked a great time to hold a Raquel Welch retrospective. Not only has she been a frequent Oscar presenter, one of her best performances is in a film resembling this year's Best Picture frontrunner. Merchant-Ivory's 1975 The Wild Party is inspired by both Joseph Moncure March's boozy Jazz Age poem (told to the audience by David Dukes' character as he writes it) and downfall of comic Fatty Arbuckle, here called Jolly (James Coco). Like The Artist's George, Jolly is trying to save his career with a silent epic. Welch plays his girl Queenie, the hostess of Brother Jasper's sneak preview blowout bash. She not only shows her dramatic skills, but also entertains her guests with a rousing song-and-dance. This undeservedly neglected Merchant-Ivory film is as literary and period perfect as their other films.
