Check out some of today's premiere electronic DJs operating outside of their musical comfort zones in this hybrid documentary/Hyundai marketing tool directed by Amir Bar-Lev (The Tillman Story). The Re:Generation Music Project was concocted by GreenLight Media & Marketing, a music-focused agency enlisted by Hyundai to promote their new sports car to a younger demo (now, before you reach for the barf bag, the end product is actually thoughtful, fascinating and doesn't feel like a sales pitch). GreenLight wondered what might happen if someone like Mark Ronson was asked to produce jazz music or Skrillez turned out a rock song with the help of the Doors, so with the support of Hyundai and the Grammys, they enlisted a group of artists willing to give this genre-bending exercise a whirl and documented the creation of their musical mash-ups. In addition to Ronson and Skrillex, other guinea pigs include the Crystal Method, who work with Martha Reeves to interpret R&B, DJ Premiere who waves a wand at classical, and Pretty Lights who gets schooled by Dr. Ralph Stanley while reimagining country. Bar-Lev's film expertly captures each producer's process and demonstrates how electronic music can connect with other musical genres.
