We like to fantasize that crushable Canadian-born Nick Thorburn had us in mind when he decided to release his latest Islands record, A Sleep & A Forgetting, on Valentine's Day. Thorburn, who has recently been found recording material under his alter ego Nick Diamonds and indulging in side projects Mister Heavenly and Human Highway, formed Islands back in 2005 after his band with Alden Penner and Jamie Thompson, the Unicorns, sadly went extinct. Islands, known for their futuristic rock sound, developed an audience with their 2006 debut Return to the Sea, which featured guest appearances by members of Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade. Six years and three albums later, Islands are still afloat. A Sleep & A Forgetting which contains songs written by Thorburn following a bad break-up, is an intimate, soulful record with an indie-pop sensibility. Tonight, Thorburn and crew, who usually turn a bewitching live show, play selections from their songbook with James Friley's Kentucky-born solo project, Idiot Glee, opening.

(Le) Poisson Rouge says…

Acclaimed modernist pop band Islands will release their new album A Sleep & A Forgetting this February 14th via Anti-Records. While A Sleep & A Forgetting continues the band’s penchant for crafting adventuresome and infectious state of the art pop music, this time band leader Nick Thorburn has infused the songs with a personal introspection that gives the record a new and powerful emotional resonance.

Islands began in 2005, emerging from the ashes of Montreal pop sensations The Unicorns. In their previous incarnation, they had crafted a vibrant distinctly low-fi sound that quickly made them cult sensations. Popmatters heralded The Unicorn’s distinct style as, “genuinely great pop music that's experimental, catchy, and, most of all, weird” while Pitchfork called the trio’s sound as “totally natural and new.”
