British filmmaker Ben Wheatley retains his spot on our watch list with his meaty Down Terrace follow-up, Kill List. Co-written with wife Amy Jump, the film begins as a domestic drama, but after a few gnarly turns, mutates into something more akin to surreal horror. At the open, we are thrown into the home of middle-class husband and wife, Jay and Shel, who are arguing about money as their son listens from another room. We slowly piece together that Jay is a hitman who has been out-of-work following a botched job. His partner in crime, Gal, played by Michael Smiley, has connected with a new contract and it's from there that the gruesome occult savagery ensues. We appreciate Wheatley because his gritty features ask the viewer to switch the brain light on from the first frame. He doesn't spoonfeed; the action unfolds and asks that we fill in the blanks. If you can stomach the gore, this sophomore effort is worth placing on your to-do list.
