“Imagine what kind of mind-blowing masterpieces might have resulted if Beethoven had jammed with the Beatles or Mahler had made music with Frank Zappa. These are the sort of crazy classical/indie rock mash-ups the founders of the Ecstatic Music Festival are going for at their annual event, which is modeled after the Bang on a Can Marathon. Curated by Judd Greenstein of New Amsterdam Records, this year's series of harmonic collisions spans 11 concerts and features over 150 musicians. Some of the pairings include the Mountain Goats and Anonymous 4; Oneida and Rhys Chatham; and Glasser and Roomful of Teeth. Dan Deacon, who popped in last year with a memorable performance showcasing soda bottles, also returns to partner with NOW Ensemble and the Calder Quartet on what is sure to be an unusual new work. Teeming with talent and divergent perspectives, this one-of-a-kind musical odyssey is not to be missed.”
