Philippe Garrel's veiled autobiographical account of his decade-long relationship with Nico, J'entends plus la guitare (I No Longer Hear the Guitar) is an intense portrait of both romantic and narcotic dependency.
As ruminative Gerard swoons helplessly in and out of love and heroin with his golden, somnolent lover Marianne, Garrel creates a woozy, hermetic world out of gray shadows, pallid colors and lingering loose ends of experience. Marked by the director's usual fragmentary structure and willing indifference to chronology, Garrel's film is at once delicate and brutally physical, murmuring yet precisely rendered, a tender, unsettling post-mortem whose hold is difficult to shake.
