“tUnE-yArDs is a chore to type out and only slightly simpler to listen to, the music similarly riddled with jolting ups and downs. But get past the type (and the facepaint and feathers), and there's a lot to love about Merrill Garbus' chaotically looping, Afro-pop-inspired arrangements of ukulele, percussion, and her own leaping, unpredictable voice. Live, her on-the-fly loops, uke plucking, and ululating are bolstered by an adept rhythm section.”

tUnE-yArDs is the experimental folk project led by Merrill Garbus, one of the most original artists ever to be presented in The Allen Room. Trained in the theatre and transformed by a visit to Africa, Merrill has spun a patchwork of surprising rhythms and eloquent vocal techniques into threads of personal empowerment and life-affirming zeal.
