Elsa Rovayo was born in Ceuta, where she did the rounds of all the dance academies until, at fifteen, she got her family’s permission to further herself in Madrid. She began to earn money dancing at seventeen on the “tablao circuit”, an adventure starting at sunset and always finishing in the wee small hours. She advanced her career in flamenco dance, performing as a soloist in the dance troupe of Merche Esmeralda, and touring with many dance companies: Ricardo Franco, Sara Lezana and José Antonio Galicia. One night while performing in a club in Chueca, Elsa took a step forward and started to sing, and that night La Shica was born. She made a DVD of two songs, a reworked copla and “Zíngara Rapera” and set off to tour Europe, going from performing in front of small crowds to performing in front of ten thousand people who had gathered to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Rome. Her first album, “Trabajito de Chinos”, confirmed her as a major new talent, been nominated to the Spanish music awards in 2009, as artist revelation of the year, and now with SUPERCOP, she won Spanish Music Awards 2011 as Best New Act and Best New Author, it’s clear that she is no one-hit wonder resting on her laurels. She has taken part in international festivals like Roskilde Festival (Denmark), Zagreb Summer Festival (Croatia), Festival Med (Portugal), Festival Sur la route des musique tsiganes (France). And in different cities such as: praga, zagreb, roma, turín, lisboa, estocolmo, buenos aires, santiagode chile, budapest, copenhagen, atenas, creta…
