Here's a snapshot of our favorite things to do in New York.

  New York
Nov 27-Dec 3, 2007
GO TO SITE

With Thanksgiving's gluttony behind us, a month of rampant consumerism and winter holiday kitsch is upon us. Still, the best way to handle all the overdone cheese-mongering is to give in, at least a little — because, let's face it, New York is at its most special when it's all gussied up this time of year. So whether or not you make it to Wednesday's 75th-annual Rockefeller Center tree-lighting ceremony, try to let the season lighten your spirits (along with your wallet, of course).

  SPECIAL FEATURE
One Step Beyond

We've pulled out several stops for this year's final installment of One Step Beyond at the American Museum of Natural History. DFA wunderkind Juan Maclean hits the decks with backup from FIXED residents JDH & Dave P, while Search for Life stuns stargazers in the planetarium. Grab tix online, at the door, or at Other Music.

Big Statement
As "It"-bag fatigue grows, labels are redefining the statement accessory.

  FILM: Documentary
Andy Goldsworthy: Rivers and Tides (2001)
when: Tuesday Nov 27, 2007 (6:30pm)
where: Horticultural Society of New York (148 W 37th St, 13th Fl, 212.757.0915) map
price: $5 suggested donation
Andy Goldsworthy's more ephemeral sculptures only last for a few hours after their completion. In one scene of Rivers and Tides, the artist weaves small twigs into a web-like pattern for most of the morning, only to have it collapse again and again at the slightest breeze. Other works, such as his signature egg-shaped mounds of rock, withstand crashing waves for years at a time before breaking down. In either case, Goldsworthy's work begs to be filmed and photographed, being composed entirely of natural materials and sometimes constructed in remote locations. This documentary follows the artist from his quirky and frenetic home life, out into the solitary calm of his open-air studio. -

  MUSIC: Global
Tinariwen
when: Tuesday Nov 27, 2007 (8pm)
where: Highline Ballroom (431 W 16th St, 212.414.5994) map
price: $25
Music will set you free, or, in a perfect world, overthrow the entire government of Mali. Tinariwen are the musical gods of the Sahara, mythologized throughout Southern Africa as troubadour warriors. (The general notion seems to be that they roam the desert with electric guitars in one hand and AK-47s in the other.) The band was born when its members met in Muammar Qaddafi's labor camps in 1980s Libya; they are Tuareg, the native nomads of the great African desert. The music itself combines everything from Moroccan chaabi to the compositions of Mr. Kenny Rogers. Last year, they performed a studio showdown with the Arctic Monkeys, broadcast by the BBC; contrary to legend, they do not bring their guns to gigs, which must have been a relief to the Monkeys. - Dan Halpern

  ART
Projects 86: Gert & Uwe Tobias
when: Wednesday Nov 28, 2007 (10:30am–5:30pm) More times»
where: MoMA The Museum of Modern Art (11 West 53rd Street, 212.708.9400) Directions: MoMA is located at 11 West Fifty-third Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues. Subway: E or V to Fifth Avenue/53 Street; B, D, or F to 47-50 Streets/Rockefeller Center. Bus: M1, 2, 3, 4, 5 to 53 Street map
price: $20
The colorful woodcuts of Gert and Uwe Tobias are the stuff of Grimm fairy tales — narrow paths worn through the woods, ominous mountain ranges, owls, and castles. The artists are an odd pair themselves: the twin brothers from the Transylvanian region of Romania work in adjoining studios, collaborating and often finishing each other's work. While their materials and subject-matter are rooted in folk traditions, they are not without a contemporary sense of humor, drawing heavily on Hollywood horror flicks and camp classics — including, yes, Dracula. In addition to woodcuts, the pair makes sculptural installations, ceramic pieces, typewriter drawings, and vibrant watercolors. -

Note: On opening night at 8:30pm, PopRally hosts a private viewing of the exhibition, with the artists present. Admission is $8 and includes free Bitburger beer as well as a performance by folk duo Lewis & Clarke.

  MUSIC: Rock/Pop
Celebration w/ Holy Fuck and Effi Briest
when: Wednesday Nov 28, 2007 (8pm)
where: Bowery Ballroom (6 Delancey St, 212.533.2111) map
price: $14
Recently, a much fussed-over New Yorker article lamented the lack of black rhythmic influence on today's indie-rock bands. If you're inclined to agree with this sentiment, there's still no blaming Celebration. On last month's The Modern Tribe, the group injects an irresistibly pulsing mix of soul and tribal polyrhythms into driving psychedelic rock. As if this impeccable groove weren't enough, Katrina Ford's soaring, Siouxsie-esque vocals further buttress the cabaret of sounds. In the end, when each of these elements collide in tight competition, it's the audience that wins out. So if you count yourself among those wishing indie bands would put a little more bounce in their beat, Celebration are an enthralling change of pace. - Stephen Gossett

  PERFORMING ARTS: Comedy
Goodnight, O.J.
when: Thursday Nov 29, 2007 (8pm)
where: UCB Theatre (307 W 26th St) map
price: $5
To help pay for the brilliant lawyers that would eventually get him acquitted (those rhyming couplets of Cochran's turned out to be pure genius), O.J. Simpson published hundreds of letters sent to him on the inside, along with his responses, in a book entitled I Want to Tell You. Tonight, seasoned character actor and sharp NYC alterna-comic Livia Scott performs excerpts of the book as her new one-woman show, Goodnight, O.J. Predictably hilarious and absurd in its look at the athlete/Bronco enthusiast's obvious ego-plays, the play is also at turns moving and disturbing, as the only thing more outrageous than O.J. just might be O.J.'s ardent fans. - Leah Taylor

  MUSIC: DJ
Robots presents Ewan Pearson and Lee Curtiss
when: Thursday Nov 29, 2007 (10pm–4am)
where: Cielo (18 Little W 12th St, 212.645.5700) Directions: The nearest subway stop is on 14th St at 8 ave on the A/C/E line. map
price: $20 / $10 advance
The Robots crew continues to demonstrate its fine taste in techno, enlisting the UK's Ewan Pearson and Detroit-bred Lee Curtiss. Pearson's style is at once fluid, metallic, and sublime; his production work and DJ selections straddle tech-house and pop, making for an energetic, euphoric dance-floor experience. Lately, he released a double-disc compilation of remixes, Piece Work, while his contribution to the Fabric mix series (35) exemplifies his enjoyably unusual cuts. Midwesterner-turned-Berliner and Alphahouse label staple Lee Curtiss opens the night with his beloved weird, percussive sound. - First Name Last Name

  MORE FLAVOR: Party
Flavorpill presents One Step Beyond feat. Juan Maclean w/ JDH & Dave P
when: Friday Nov 30, 2007 (9pm)
where: American Museum of Natural History (200 Central Park West, 212.769.5100) map
price: $20 (includes free ticket for future museum visit)
Formerly of the synthy post-punk band Six Finger Satellite, Juan Maclean (né John) has since become one of the backbone artists for New York's DFA Records. His productions draw upon the oddball robotics of Kraftwerk, pinched-nerve funk, the history of disco, and beyond — his DJ set tonight should be much the same, shimmying around the Moog and the cowbell with equal dexerity. JDH & Dave P, two music obsessives who've undeniably influenced the recent state of New York dance floors, crank out electro and techno in support. - First Name Last Name

Contemporary art returns to lower Manhattan with the opening of the new New Museum's boxy, neo-minimalist abode on the Bowery. Designed by SANAA (Japanese duo Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa), the building also comes stocked with an ambitious new program and team of curators. Beginning at noon on Saturday, the museum welcomes visitors for 30 continuous hours of free (albeit ticketed) admission. Contemporary sculptures fill the building's spare interior for the inaugural exhibition, Unmonumental. Special commissions include Ugo Rondinone's neon-rainbow banner Hell Yes! — recently spotted on the building's shimmering facade — and YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES' noir-inspired, seven-channel video work in the lobby. -

Jams come courtesy of resident DJs Eamon Harkin and Rok One and guest "skate guard" Jacques Renault.     Stones Throw team captain PB Wolf brings out his stone-y starting lineup for some holiday-ready bounce. The ingenious and ever-productive Madlib pulls tracks from the B-Ball Zombie War comp, the Beat Konducta series, and his own vast arsenal, including a few from his new Supreme Team project with Karriem Riggins. Guilty Simpson does some street testifying from his upcoming solo release, Ode to the Ghetto heavy with production from the legendary J Dilla (whose beats flow throughout large portions of the night's performances), alongside Percee P. and MED. J.Rocc works his beat-fiending fingers, and Mr. Wolf takes care of his own vinyl habits as well. - Regina Bresler

Amon Amarth
when: Monday Dec 3, 2007 (8pm)
where: Fillmore NY at Irving Plaza (17 Irving Pl, 212.777.6800) map
price: $24 / $20 advance
Amon Amarth aren't too fond of their shirts, even in December. Being Vikings from Sweden, they're used to the cold and even thrive on it. Their synchronized hair twirling probably helps keep them warm, as well, and their epic hymns to Odin remind us that there was a reason that their people dominated Europe for the better part of three centuries. As popular as the band has become, it has yet to succumb to metalcore/emo wanking, staying true to its chunky, melodic death metal on its latest album, With Odin on Our Side. As Ralph Wiggum once put it, "Oh boy! Sleep! That's where I'm a Viking!" Amon Amarth are sure to make you wish you were a Viking all the time. - First Name Last Name

  PERFORMING ARTS: Dance
Ballet Hispanico
when: Tuesday Nov 27, 2007 More times»
where: The Joyce Theater (175 8th Ave, 212.691.9740) map
price: $25 - 44
Celebrating a vibrant 20 years at the Joyce Theatre, Ballet Hispanico returns with two fiery programs. Palladium Nights is the troupe's homage to the legendary NYC nightclub, which, following its desegregation in the early '50s, sparked a Latin-dance craze that influenced performers, parlors, and clubs from coast to coast. Mimicking music greats like cowbell-heavy Big Three Palladium Orchestra, an onstage band adds to the glamour with effervescent cha-chas, mambos, tangos, and salsas. BH's equally inspiring repertory program features critical fave Club Havana and Tito on Timbales, in which choreographer William Whitener uses movement to evoke drummer Tito Puente's rhythms. - Stephan Paschalides

  FILM
The Savages
when: Wednesday Nov 28, 2007 (noon–midnight) More times»
where: Various locations map
price: Various prices
Until The Savages, director Tamara Jenkins had been languishing with a real case of the what-have-you-done-for-us-latelies; her last film, the incorrigible, smart-mouthed Slums of Beverly Hills hit theaters more than nine years ago. That said, amnesia can go both ways, and this new fable about adult siblings (Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman) forced to abandon their long estrangement in order to tend to their ailing father, has already set tongues a-flapping in the festival circuit. The trick here is the scale — minute wit, gestures, and maturation — and a crumpled sincerity that renders impossible the big-scale manipulation that typically comprises silver-screen emotional reckonings. - Lisa Rosman
