Karaoke Relapse with the Thermals

People get really, really in to karaoke.

People get really, really in to karaoke. (Photo: Nate Dorr)

Falling somewhere between regular karaoke and actually having your own rock band, the second edition of New York magazine's Karaoke Relapse saw buzzy Portland Oregon punk-rockers the Thermals momentarily setting aside the aggressive politics of their last album in favor of sing-along classics. After a full set of their own songs and some standup comedy bits from hosts the Whitest Kids U' Know, the three-piece stepped back to allow audience members to hop onstage and take the mics, playing brisk covers of classics from the likes of the Kinks, Devo, and the Supremes. The guest singers, for their part, brought fervid enthusiasm, and often (but not always) an actual familiarity with the lyrics they were singing. Regardless, it definitely beats the muzak backing tracks you get at some of those other karaoke places. (Words: Nate Dorr) Read the event preview

  • Everything went down at Studio B, who thankfully didn't gather long lines outside.
  • People get really, really in to karaoke.
  • True to form, the Thermals were excellent.
  • It was all a pretty exciting for this guy.
  • When we arrived, the band had just taken the stage.
  • Hutch Harris handles vocals and guitar.
  • Kathy Foster plays bass.
  • Lorin Coleman keeps the beat.
  • Together they play effective, fuzzed-out rock songs that kept the audience rivetted.
  • The audience, rivetted.
  • People were excited for the start of the karaoke portion of the evening.
  • The Whitest Kids U' Know sang about food to a rendition on "I Wanna Be Sedated."
  • The karaoke itself began with the Kinks.
  • And continued unbroken except for introductions from one of the Whitest Kids.
  • We may be wrong, but this may have been "Rebel Rebel".
  • We knew we were going to forget who sang what almost immediately.
  • And so we really couldn't tell you what was sung here.
  • The crowd often sang along with the singers.
  • Still couldn't tell you what's being sung.
  • A few dramatic falls took place, among discarded props.
  • At the end, the audience had a chance to sing actual Thermals songs, as here, with "Pillar of Salt"
  • Some of the otherwise unused props found their way out into the crowd
  • While on-stage enthusiasm continued unabated.
  • One of the singers, returned to the crowd.
  • The Whitest Kids (U' Know) were still MCing here and there.
  • Everything ended in an open call for anyone interested to storm the stage for one last song.
  • But the karaoke was still recognizably karaoke, in the best ways.
