Five years after The Searchers, John Ford returns to Comanche hostage-bartering and virulent frontier race-hate, in a cynical, all-around tough 1961 work that finds the sun setting over Ford's once-optimistic West, as he would continue to see it with a more and more jaundiced (and rheumy) eye in the decade to come.

Dick Widmark's Lieutenant teams with James Stewart's mercenary Texan Marshal to bring home a passel of white captives taken in long-ago raids, who're then faced with the fresh trauma of re-acclimating to "the blessings of civilization." With Andy Devine, providing Ford's beloved sideshow slapstick.

Director: John Ford. 109 min. 1961. 35mm.

An Army captain and former P.O.W. is court martialed back home for treasonously embracing Commie brainwashing in this little-screened Korean War film from a “bombshell” of a Broadway play.

Hiring Karl Malden to direct, Richard Widmark stars as the prosecuting Governor’s Island colonel who smells a rat, opposite Rip Torn as a lieutenant and fellow ex-P.O.W. who’s feeling the heat. Flashbacks thrust us back to the cold, cold camp (overseen by the brainwasher from The Manchurian Candidate), from Widmark's claustrophobic Army offices. With Richard Basehart parroting cant as the troubled red, to the bewilderment of his wife June Lockhart.

Director: Karl Malden. 97 min. 1957. 35mm.

Kyle MacLachlan’s first collaboration with David Lynch was also his very first big screen role.

In adapting Frank Herbert's beloved, complex scifi novel, Lynch had his work cut out for him. The year is 10,191 and a war is on to gain control of the planet Dune – desirable for Spice, which makes time travel possible. Declared a disaster upon release, Dune nevertheless found its audience, attracted to its hypnotic imagery, or even just fans of Sting.

Director: David Lynch. 137 min. 1984. 35mm.
