A new annual series, Art of the Real seeks to celebrate and question our standard definition of the documentary by showcasing the work of non-fiction filmmakers who are pushing the form to its extremes. Screening over 45 shorts and features, the two-week genre-bending fete includes new works as well as recent restorations. Kicking things off are two films, the North American premiere of Corneliu Porumboiu’s The Second Game, and Raya Martin and Mark Peranson’s La última película, which finds filmmaker Alex Ross Perry (The Color Wheel) scouting locations in Mexico on the eve of the Mayan Apocalypse. Other highlights include the premiere of three works by James Benning, Robert Greene’s Actress about Brandy Burre’s bumpy return to work, and a special screening of Derek Jarman’s Blue (1993) introduced by artist Carolee Schneemann. Also part of the series is a Focus on the Sensory Ethnography Lab, which, in conjunction with the Whitney Biennial, presents works that were either produced at Harvard's Sensory Ethnography Lab or that inspire the filmmakers participating in the non-fiction academic program. A number of notable filmmakers are scheduled to appear throughout the run of the series, check the Film Society of Lincoln Center's website for full details.
