Pilobolus 2The Joyce Theater
175 8th Ave, New York, NY
It's summertime in the city and for those with a fondness for contemporary dance, that means it's time to make a pilgrimage to the Joyce to catch this year's engagement of Pilobolus. A company known to inspire with their wildly imaginative dances fueled by humor, athleticism and a charming sense of whimsy, the world renowned troupe presents two programs of greatest hits, each featuring a New York premiere. This year’s shiny new works include On the Nature of Things, which finds three dancers gracefully battling it out atop a two-foot wide column that rises from the stage, and The Inconsistent Peddler, a comical fable conceived with assistance from Etgar Keret and Shira Geffen, that features a girl whose bicycle pedaling speeds up and slows down time. Among the pieces being reprised are Penn & Teller’s Houdini-inspired [esc], Trish Sie’s Licks, the live video for OK Go’s All is Not Lost, and Rushes, which is a captivating and humorous work involving a group of chairs. Suitable for audiences of all ages, Pilobolus serves as a wonderful entry point for this getting their toes wet in dance.
