Art Driss Ouadahi: Another Place, Another Me

Hosfelt Gallery presents two new exhibitions that remind us that it is indeed hip to be square — though Düsseldorf-based Driss Ouadahi and West Coaster Susan Marie Dopp employ their right angles for markedly different ends. Ouadahi's paintings are laced with the high-rise grids of somber housing developments all too familiar to low-income families and struggling immigrants; the structures in these paintings act as barricades, symbolic of the social barriers that impede their inhabitants. Dopp, meanwhile, focuses her geometry inward. Featuring subdued compositions and mute pastels, her pieces seem to suggest that they operate on Zen-driven engines — easily described, but deceptive in their simplicity.
