Though born of different generations whose aesthetic movements were fueled by disparate forces, the works of Nam June Paik, Alan Rath, and Kota Ezawa all owe a significant debt to technology. Paik — with his totemic structures made of television monitors and Fluxus-art cred — is inarguably the leader of this pack, and the Haines Gallery provides a rare opportunity to see two of his pieces. Ezawa's animated appropriations of news and media excerpts and Rath's robotic video works don't merely pay homage to the late Paik, however; they serve to chronicle the innovations of new-media artists in his wake.
