Westerners tend to impose self-created "exotic" qualities on Asian cultures when faced with interpreting the Far East. Artist Will Rogan avoids this trap in his artistic document of a recent trip to Tokyo. Rogan's investigation is part of a larger reflection on history's lingering presence in our present environments. Like Alain Resnais' deeply moving 1959 film Hiroshima mon amour, which Rogan references, the photographs, video, and numerous works on paper of A Memory of Shadows and Stone create a piercing tension between the need to remember and to look to the future.
