In Williams' latest show, the theme of porches stands for a state of uncertainty, an in-between space that's neither interior nor exterior. It proves to be the perfect backdrop for his figures — mostly shirtless men — who all rest within their own emotional uncertainty. His meticulously rendered characters exude isolation and self-consciousness within stylishly minimal compositions. There is an overall sense of a certain personal loneliness that comes from awkwardness with others. Williams imbues his figures with hints of dark narratives and inner turmoil, neither expressed nor concealed, which give these paintings a ponderous complexity.
