Saxophonist Howard Wiley performs from his newest release, The Angola Project, which derives its structure from the call-and-response form of African-American spiritual music and recordings of slave chants from Angola prison in the 1950s. Wiley creates a musical bridge across what literary critic Paul Gilroy has called the black Atlantic, bringing together scat and opera, jazz and gospel, Africa and the African Diaspora.
