Film Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975)

Belgium-born director Chantal Akerman's cinéma-vérité-like portrait of three days in the life of a bourgeois widow lays bare the rote series of repeated tasks that constitute "life" in the domestic sphere. The ritualized manner in which Jeanne (played with unnerving restraint by Delphine Seyrig) goes about preparing dinner, cleaning house, and bedding the men who drop by before her spoiled son comes home from school, is as hypnotic as it is banal, making the tiny cracks that start to appear around the edges of our heroine's existence that much more devastating.
