The Booksmith says…

Former Sacramento native Adrian Tomine makes suffering a cleanly outlined, black-and-white art form — literally. Now based in New York, where his sparse drawings of moody hipsters grace the pages of the New Yorker and Rolling Stone, Tomine hasn't forgotten his roots; he continues to draw, write, and release Optic Nerve, the sporadic comic-book series that he started in 1991. Shortcomings, his latest anthology, collects the most recent three issues of Optic Nerve. Filled with subtle nods to Bay Area landmarks and containing some of his most emotionally wrenching story lines yet, Shortcomings can be seen as an allegory of Tomine's own move to the East Coast.
