More Flavor: Festival Día de los Muertos Procession
-
- Día de los Muertos
Like Halloween, Día de los Muertos has its roots in pre-Christian tradition. A celebration of departed ancestors and the continuation of life, the holiday originally fell on the ninth month of the Aztec calendar. Conversion to Christianity couldn't eradicate the tradition, and it eventually coincided with the Catholic All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2). The raucous festival is as iconic of Mexico as the Mexican flag, so what better place to celebrate it than in the Mission? Bring candles, flowers, and pan de muerto to leave for loved ones on the community ofrenda, but leave room in your belly — not all the food tonight is for the dead.
